How to be a good boss (that people actually want to work for)

How to be a good boss (that people actually want to work for)How to be a good boss (that people actually want to work for)I will never forget the first time an employee told me she was resigning. Our team meeting finished and she asked for a few moments of my time. She announced she had a new job, and I was shocked. Nothing I asked or said changed herbei mind. Watching her walk out of my office, I realized I had failed her s of questions includeWhy do you do this job? What do you aspire to?How do you like to be recognized? What are the strengths/weaknesses of the department? What difficult questions do you have for me?Through these conversations, I have learned what motivates employees, the career ambitions they may not have said out loud yet, and how we can improve our organization. The best bosses provide opportunities for growthStay conversations are vital however, theyre only the first step. You have to then provide the training and chances for your employee to develop and achieve the ir goals. This may include informational meetings with managers in other departments, formal mentoring, leadership development classes, or professional conferences. It could mean creating or re-envisioning a project that will hilfe the organizational goals and align with the individuals strengths. It can also be as simple as a dedicated time outside of an update meeting where they can ask you questions about handling different work situations. Not every one of your staff members will know what they want to do next or what skills they need to acquire. Work together with your employees to identify areas for growth and provide engaging projects. The best bosses maintain high standardsAs leaders, its important to set high standards - as well as to be prepared to help your staff meet and exceed them. Tell your employees that you have their back and you believe in them. If you expect a lot of others and coach them, you will motivate them to achieve what they previously didnt think was possi ble. This is where the magic happens.Dont be afraid to challenge your employees. Do make koranvers they have the skills and environment they need to be successful.I learned the hard way that I need to specifically tell employees I want them to be their best selves - not me. Remember, high standards should not be code for do it my way. Rather, its about your employees developing their unique skills to build the efforts of the team and the organization. The best bosses champion their employees (wherever they are)Sydney Finkelstein, the author of Superbosses and Dartmouth business school professor, says that managers should focus on developing high potential employees by helping them be the best versions of themselves and leveraging their skills - without retention being the focus. He asserts that by supporting and challenging employees, you will retain them even longer, even though that isnt the primary goal.Even with this in mind, at some point, your employee may outgrow your team - no matter how much effort you both put into making their role valuable. At that time, it should not be a surprise when they say they plan to leave. Great bosses understand this and dont try to hang onto people or hold them back.I have passing thoughts about the employee who resigned unexpectedly all those years ago. I wish her success and happiness wherever she is. What I have learned since then helps me stay focused on my role as a manager and teach others what I have learned along the way. As I have continued to learn and grow as a manager, I have seen the effects of supporting employees ambitions. One more recent departing employee sent me a note, Your grace maintains even after I go through another door. Will always be grateful for that.We never know what doors will open and when we will cross paths again. We should treat employees with the same kindness and support as we did when they entered our organization. This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

7 ways to not feel so overwhelmed all the time

7 ways to not feel so overwhelmed all the time7 ways to not feel so overwhelmed all the timeFeeling overwhelmed? Are you constantly running from thing to thing but never getting it all done? When researchers survey people, they say theyre too busy - about everything.Too busy to make friends, date, sleep, have sex, to go on vacation or to even have lunch.Via Overwhelmed Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the TimeIn surveys, people say theyre too busy to make friends outside the office, too busy to date, too busy to sleep, and too busy to have sex. Eight in ten Britons report being too busy to eat dessert, even though four in ten say dessert is better than sex. Were in such a rush that the typical sound bite for a presidential candidate has been compressed from forty seconds in 1968 to 7.3 seconds in 2000. Remember those unused vacation days? People say theyre too busy to take a vacation and too busy for a lunch break. The average high school kid today experiences the saatkorn level o f anxiety as the average psychiatric patient of the 1950s.And being this busy isnt healthy - in fact, neuroscientists have found it shrinks your brain.ViaOverwhelmed Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Timethe prefrontal cortex. It is the key to human intelligence. In its size and complexity, it is, in short, what distinguishes humans from animals and makes us who we are. And, Ansell says, what she and other neuroscientists are finding is that when a human feels pressed for time, rushed and caught up in the overwhelm, that yellow blob does something alarming It shrinks. How did we get here? The time diaries he studies show that average hours on the job, not only in the United States but also around the globe, have actually been holding-gesellschaft steady or going down in the last forty years. Everybody, he says, has more time for leisure. So why do we feel like were overwhelmed even though were not? Partly, its because our time is so fragmented.Switching between checking email, making dinner, watching TV and finishing that report is more mentally draining than doing one at a time.ViaOverwhelmed Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the TimeIts role overload, she explains. Its the constant switching from one role to the next that creates that feeling of time pressure. When all youre expected to do is work all day, you work all day in one long stretch, she says. But the days of the mothers she studied were full of starts and stops, which makes time feel more collapsed.Multitasking is killing us.And the best part?Multitasking doesnt even work. Driving while talking on the cell phone slows reaction times and awareness to the same degree that driving over the legal alcohol limit does. And the distractions from too many things going on at once hamper the brains spam filter and the ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information. Breaking the Rules to Find Your Perfect Job

Breaking the Rules to Find Your Perfect Job In your career, things dont always work out the way you plan them to.I first learned this lesson myself in college. I went to one of those fancy private schools to study computer engineering in the late 90s. I knew that an investment in such a degree would guarantee me a job and not just any job, but a great-paying job when I graduated.I couldnt have been more wrong. The dot-com crash came along right in the middle of my studies, putting a haltestelle on hiring in the industry. Even the recruiters whonormally came to our school to scout outstudents canceled their visits. It was a situation Id never seen before and couldnt have predicted. This experience took me down the path of finding my transferrable skills and learning about new careers. I also learned how to interview for all sorts of jobs in many different industries and I got overmy fear of reaching out to strangers. This was a skill set I developed out of survival I needed to pay the rent.I know it sounds strange, but when you learn to approach job interviews from a different angle, they become less scary and much more interesting. I looked at (and continue to look at) interviewing as a chance to make new professional contacts and learn about new jobs. I see interviews as networking meetings, not as opportunities to be rejected by strangers.Another benefit of this new skill set and outlook is I no longer care as much if I meet every little minimum requirement listed in a job description. You know why? Because, truth be told, many employers dont really care if you do. If an employer brings you in for an interview, its because they think you can do the job. Why not submit your application and let them decide? If we could all spend a little less time worrying about being the perfect candidate and a little more time just being the best candidates we can be, wed all go a little further, faster. When I learned this lesson, my own car eer path changed dramatically. I went from being an engineer to a project manager, and then from a project manager to a digital marketing executive. Now, Im a career coach. I could have never guessed in the 90s that my career path would have been so winding.I was recently invited to share my story of career success at a TEDx talk. My talk, titled How I broke the rules and found my perfect job, shares my story of not waiting for permission and a little obsession I developed along the way. You may have already noticed It turns out, I really like interviewing.I invite you check out my TEDx talk below. Its my hope that you will be inspired to bend the rules in your own search, so you, too, can find your perfect job.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence in a New Job

5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence in a New Job5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence in a New JobYou walk through the door on the first day of your new job, and there it is that shrinking fear that tells you that you dont know anyone, you dont know how things are done, you dont know who to talk to, and you dont know how friendly or over-the-top professional you need to be.You dont even know where the good coffee is.And for many of us, thats just the beginning. Starting a new job can stir deep feelings of anxiety, making you feel as though youre on the outside, not good enough, or smaller than you really are. But, the sooner you can face those fears, the sooner you can dive in and start making an impact. Here are five helpful ways to keep those nerves at bay, ease your fears, and feel more confident at your new job.1. RelaxWalk into a new job with your body full of tension and your fists (even metaphorically) clenched, and youll not only stress yourself out, youll put everyone else on edge, too . Youll be short or snappish with people because thats how your body is. Youll be less inclined to open up with new colleagues because youre in self-protection mode. And you wont be in a place to do great work because youre so focused on yourself.Your bodys a great mirror for how your mind is, so if your body is tense and anxious, theres a good chance its because thats how youre feeling. So relax. Loosen your shoulders. Breathe naturally. Listen to your body, and when you feel it becoming tense or tightening up, make a deliberate choice to loosen up and relax.2. Remember Why Youre ThereThe scariness of a brand new job in a big new building can easily make you forget what youre doing there in the first place- all that excitement and buzz gets swapped with fear and trepidation. So, its helpful to remember why youre there. Right off the bat, remember that youre at your new workplace because you were selected- among all the dozens of candidates- as the best rolle for the job. Your employe rs have faith in you and want you to succeed, and their job is to help you flourish in the role.Secondly, remind yourself why you got excited about landing the job. Whether its because of what you get to do, how you get to grow, the value you get to bring, or the difference you get to make, those are the things to focus on and remember.3. Trust the ProcessIn any new role, theres pressure to perform right from the start, whether that means finding the best solutions, providing the right answers, or impressing the right people. But perhaps the most important thing to remember in any job is that you dont need to have all the answers. In fact, acting as though you do is really just using bluster and hubris to keep people from thinking youre not good enough.Nobody expects you to know everything. And when youre faced with something you dont know about, sometimes the brave thing to do is to tell people youre still figuring things out and that youll get back to them with an answer. Then, tru st yourself enough to use everything youve got to navigate through one step at a time.4. See Them as People, TooPart of the fear of a new job is comparing yourself to others and thinking that everyone around you is better in some way that they know more or do more or are capable of more. But, of course, thats just your brain making stuff up. Everyone around you is incomplete and imperfect. Everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses, wins, losses, history, and potential. And comparing yourself to those people and automatically making them better is just a strategy to keep you small and afraid. The truth is, were all people- and weve all been in a new job before. So, the next time you find yourself clamming up with new colleagues because you think theyre better than you, just smile and remember that were all in the same boat.5. Normalize NewSimply put, new is scary. Thats just how it should be.If it wasnt scary, it would mean youve done it all before or are simply following to the lett er what someone else has already carved out. And that doesnt sound like much fun at all, right?Your brain lights up like a Christmas tree when youre in a new situation where the outcome is uncertain, so the fear you feel about starting a new job is just your brain doing what its supposed to do. The real problem then, is thinking that the fear and anxiety is a problem. It isnt. Its perfectly normal. When that part of you thats scared of the new starts to scream at you, give yourself room to pause. Reassure yourself that youve come this far, tell yourself that youre not going to die, and press on through that fear. I promise With time, this too shall pass.Tell us How do you deal with the fear and anxiety of a new job?Photo of woman at work courtesy of Shutterstock.

What if companies let employees pick their holiday gifts Well ... they can

What if companies let employees pick their holiday giftstoffs Well ... they canWhat if companies let employees pick their holiday gifts Well ... they canFor companies big and small, the process of finding and ordering the perfect holiday gifts for employees can be a real nightmare before Christmas. On average, companies spend $80 per employee on holiday gifts. These tend to be basic, branded, everyday items such as bags and pens. The problem with these types of traditional corporate gifts is they dont mean anything to employees on a personal level, and they do nothing to make them feel valued. Most companies also often settle for gift cards because theyre easy to give but just as easy to forget. Cash and gift cards are practical and transactional, so they feel generic and cold rather than creative, thoughtful and appreciative.Research has revealed that 66% of people say they would quit their jobs due to lack of appreciation, and with unemployment rates at a record low, right now there is an unprecedented need to show employees that their work is appreciated. So how can companies make sure their holiday spend pays off this year? The only way is to choose gifts that really make employees feel appreciated.Meet Snappy, the company founded by Hani Goldstein and Dvir Cohen to revolutionize corporate gifting. Just as the same management style wont work for each team member, its also necessary to personalize employee appreciation.
